This is the first session of the public libraries track. Even though it’s for public libraries, there are a lot of academic librarians in the room. Public libraries are doing some really cool things that can serve as a model for academic libraries.

–the program is not a training program. It is a learning program

IGN has just released the top 100 video games of all time. The list is available here. IGN’s methods for selecting those games are as follows:

Our criteria for creating this list of your picks for the Top 100 Games of All Time are as follows:

  • All games had to receive at least 1,000 reader ratings.
  • This list is comprised of single, stand-alone titles and doesn’t include compilations, expansion packs or add-ons.
  • Titles with multiple editions such as collector’s boxes, gold editions or direct re-releases have been consolidated into one single entry, with the edition receiving the highest score taking the place for other editions.
  • Updated versions of original titles were only included on the list if they were significantly different from their predecessors.
  • Only games that have been released are eligible (this is for all you punks who think The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for Wii is a perfect “10″ already).
  • Games released anywhere in the world (that means Japanese-only releases) qualify for the list.

There are several in the list that I have played. I am currently playing a few in the list, such as Resident Evil  4 and Prince of Persia:The Sands of Time.  I own Burnout 3 (about 50% complete), Metal Gear Solid 2 (all but the last two bosses and I’m done), Splinter Cell, and MVP 2005, but I’m not playing those at them moment. Others, including God of War and Devil May Cry 3 are on my to-be-played list.  Right now I’m spending most of my time with Beyond Good & Evil, which is turning out to be a great game.  I’ll try to write a review when I’ve completed it.   It’s easy to get very wrapped up in the next-gen console war, but there’s enough games that I want to play that I can hold off until prices drop on the next-gen systems.

Business Week has put together a very nice slideshow of the history of video game consoles. Each picture has a small description about the console.  It is definitely a step back in time.

Wired has compiled a travel guide to Second Life.  The guide tells you “where to go and what to do.”

The Federation of American Scientists have published a report on educational games. The report finds that:

  • Many video games require players to master skills in demand by today’s employers.
  • There are several attributes of games that would be useful for application in learning.
  • There are differences between games for education and games for entertainment.
  • A robust program of research and experimentation is needed to enhance development of educational games by stimulating transfer of the art and technologies of video games to education and learning systems.
  • High development costs in an uncertain market for educational innovations make developing complex high-production learning games too risky for video game and educational materials industries.
  • Several barriers inhibit the markets for education games.
  • Educational institutions need to transform organizational systems and instructional practices to take greater advantage of new technology, including educational games.
  • Outcome data from large-scale evaluations of educational games are needed to demonstrate that these technologies are equal to or offer comparative advantage vs. conventional instruction methods.

There are usability issues to contend with—how easy is it to use?

Five usability issues for Blogs
–Use descriptive headlines
Most people will make a decision about reading the post based on the title
–Write clear and concise annotations
–Links say where they are going
Don’t say “click here”  . Tell them where the are going to go
–Publish frequency
Gary tries to write every Friday.
–Use Categories carefully
Don’t label posts with multiple categories.  Multiple categories will confuse the reader.  Don’t be too general or too specific.
Gary admits falling into one of the traps of being too general with some of categories.  for example, a category called “Health”
Gary admits that he created categories on the fly, when he should have put more planning into it.

Additional problems
–Marketing
Gary did not anticipate how difficult it would be for them to use it
He focused on the faculty–try to tie in with faculty’s class

If no one uses the blog, it’s a failure, according to Gary

Challenges for the future
–Clearing out dead or obsolete sites
most blogs you don’t worry about dead links, but with a research guide blog, you need to
–some links need to get migrated into research guides
–blog needs to be integrated into the research guides

Has HPER been a success?
Gary admits yes, technology, but strategically, maybe.
